Railfanning Timetables, Maps, & Guides

The below listed items can be handy weather you are trackside, planning a trip, or are looking for more info on an area. While I have not used all, I have included comments about each to the best of my ability. It should be noted that all of these links will take you away from Cuesta Pass Rails.

Altamont Press Timetables
These 4 1/4 by 11" railfan time tables include a ton of information on the railroads and lines within the state(s) they pertain to. They also include maps, signal charts, and plenty of other useful info. Very handy guides for western states.

Sonrisa Publications Maps
Sonrisa Maps are handy 4 1/4 by 11" maps that include all rail lines within the state(s) they pertain to. They also include all major highways, but they are not done to the same level of detail as the railroads are. While the rail lines themselves are do not include every little curve, and station placement may be a little off for some locations these maps are very handy for western states.

Southern California Local Freight Trains Guide
This is a guide to locals, and shortlines in the southern California area. It is incredibly well done, and has a wealth of info. If you have any interest in locals or shortlines in this area this is a must have.

Steam Powered Video Railroad Atlas of North America
These maps include almost every rail line (past and present) for the state(s) they cover. All 50 states are covered in these atlas'. These can be quite useful, but as no roads are included it can be hard to get your barring when out in the field. Also I've found some minor, but rather significant errors on a few lines, but still very useful.

DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer
These are probably the best street atlas' for railfanning. They have accurate up to date street maps, and also include railroad lines. These are very useful for more than just railfanning. Rand McNally also makes nice road atlas' but as of this writing they do not include rail lines.

Bytown Railway Society Canadian Trackside Guide
Bytown Railway Society publishes this annual Canadian Trackside Guide. I've personally never used this item, but have heard it is helpful, hence why it is included here.

Oxford Junction Press Railfan Timetables
Oxford Junction Press prints railfan timetables for the New England area. I've personally never used this item, but have heard it is helpful, hence why it is included here.

USGS Topographic Maps
USGS maps, can be extremely useful if you need details on the lay of the land for an area or if you will be hiking around a good bit. For many railfan uses they have too much info, but they can be a very handy reference.
